40th Birthday Gift for Her: Something Made, Not Bought
A 40th birthday gift for her gets judged differently from an ordinary present. She has probably had the spa voucher already, and a fortieth feels as if it ought to mark something. In my experience, the presents people keep from these birthdays are the ones somebody had made with her in mind.
The short version is to pick a photo that matters to her, or the words of a song that belongs to her, and have it turned into a print. Order the digital file about a week before the day. That gives you time to check it over and get it framed.
Why a milestone birthday gift is better made than bought
A bought gift can be lovely and still feel as if it could have gone to anyone. A portrait of her at nineteen, squinting on a beach in Crete, could only go to her.
It also takes the guesswork out of her taste. You know her memories far better than her shoe size, and a print on the wall will not end up in a drawer by March.
A custom portrait birthday gift from an old photo
Old photos suit a fortieth because they carry the years with them. Her first flat would work, or the dog she grew up with. Line art pares a photo back to the shapes that matter, which is why a slightly soft snapshot often turns out better than you would expect.
Choosing the photo
Pick for the moment first and the quality second. Once you have a few candidates, check that the faces are reasonably large in the frame. If her face is the size of a fingernail in a crowd, there is very little for me to draw from.
Soft focus is fine. Deep shadow across the eyes is harder, and so is a face half hidden behind a glass.
If you only have a printed copy, scan it rather than photographing it on the table, because a phone picks up glare and a slight tilt. A scan at 600 dpi is plenty. If the only copy lives on social media, ask whoever posted it for the original file.
Line art or watercolour
This one comes down to taste, and I usually suggest looking at her walls rather than the photo. Black line art on white paper sits well with pale wood and plain walls. Watercolour is softer. It suits a room full of plants and patterned cushions.
If you want the two of you in the picture, the advice in our guide to a custom couple portrait as an anniversary gift works just as well for a birthday.
If you already have a photo in mind, have a look through the custom line-art and watercolour portraits at OpenHeartLines and send it over with a short note about who is in it and where it was taken.
A lyric print of her song
Most people have a song tied to a particular year. It might be your first dance, or something her mum used to sing in the car. Our piece on a song lyric print for a first dance goes into choosing lines in more detail, and most of it carries over to a birthday.
Picking the words
Four to eight lines usually sit well on an A4 print, so one verse or the chorus is enough. A whole song squeezed onto the page gets hard to read.
Choose the lines she sings along to, rather than the ones that look clever on paper. Then check them against the album sleeve or the artist's official site. Lyric websites get words wrong surprisingly often, and a misprint is hard to ignore once it is behind glass.
Adding a name or date
Underneath the lyrics, one small line with her name and the year of the song gives the print some context. A long dedication competes with the words, so save that for the card.
What to send with a personalised birthday gift for her
The more you tell me at the start, the fewer changes we need later on. Before you order, have these ready:
- The original photo file, or a proper scan of a printed one
- Who is in it, left to right, if there is more than one person
- Anything to leave out, such as a stranger in the background
- Your preferred style, line art or watercolour
- For a lyric print, the exact lines typed out and checked
- Any name, date or short message, with the spelling confirmed
- The size and shape of the frame you plan to use
- The date you need it by
Frame size catches people out. A portrait laid out for a square frame will not crop neatly into a tall A3 one, so choose the frame first if you can.
Timing a 40th birthday gift for her so it is ready
Most orders arrive as a high-resolution digital file within one or two days. That is quick, but the file still has to be printed and framed.
Work backwards from the birthday. I would order seven to ten days ahead, which leaves a day to look at the file properly and ask about any small change, with a few days spare for printing.
A local print shop is the fastest route and can usually do A4 or A3 on heavy matt paper within a day. Online printing adds delivery time. A bent tube two days before the party is not worth the risk.
If the gift is for your wife's 40th, order from a device she does not use. An Etsy email landing in a shared inbox can give the game away.
Running late is not a disaster. Print the file at home on good paper and tuck it into a card, then have it framed properly the following week.
Framing and giving it
A mount, the card border between picture and frame, makes a simple print look finished. An A3 frame with a mount cut for A4 is easy to find. Wrap it flat rather than rolled. If there is a story behind the photo or the song, write it on the back, where she will come across it again years from now.
When the photo or lyrics are sorted, you can order your portrait or lyric print on Etsy about a week before her birthday. That leaves time to print and frame it without a last-minute scramble.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I order a custom portrait for a 40th birthday?
About a week to ten days is comfortable. The digital file usually arrives within one or two days, but you still need to print and frame it. If you are printing online rather than locally, add a few days for delivery. Ordering early also gives you room to ask about small changes without watching the clock.
Can you make a portrait from an old or blurry photo?
Usually, yes. Line art works from the shapes of faces and figures, so it is forgiving of soft focus and faded colour. What matters more is that faces are reasonably large in the frame and not hidden in deep shadow. If the photo is a print, scan it rather than photographing it, and send the original file where you can.
What size should I print a lyric print at?
A4 suits four to eight lines and fits most shelves and small walls. A3 gives the words more room and works better above a bed or a sofa. It is partly a matter of taste. Tell the artist the size before the work starts, so the layout is built for that shape rather than cropped afterwards.
Is a digital file a good enough gift on its own?
It can be, as long as you print it first. Handing over a framed print feels very different from forwarding an email. If time is short, print the file at home on good paper and slip it into a card with a note. A properly framed version can follow the week after.
